PARKER, Texas — The Hollywood connection in metro Dallas is strong at Southfork Ranch.
The fictional Ewing family from the hit 1980s TV show Dallas made the ranch famous.
Janna Timm, regional director of sales and marketing, said the 350-acre Southfork Ranch in Parker and its home was where Dallas was filmed from 1978 to 1991.
TNT revived Dallas from 2012 to 2014 and also filmed at the ranch.
Tours start in the Dallas museum, where groups see the actual gun that shot J.R. Ewing and other series memorabilia.
A tram takes visitors to the mansion, and on the way, a guide shares the ranch’s history and shows various animals: miniature horses, horses, lamas and longhorns.
At the mansion, guides relate the history of the first and second Dallas series while conducting the tour.
“People say the rooms look bigger on TV — and they do,” Timm said. “Rooms were smaller in the 1970s when the mansion was built and during the filming they used a lot of movie magic.”
Jennifer Williams, group tour sales manager, said Jock Ewing’s 1978 Lincoln Continental is a tour highlight, as well as the Ewing family tree for the original series.
Sherry Haughwout, retail and tour manager, noted younger visitors, who were introduced to Dallas through the TNT series, have become fans of the original series.
Meals at Southfork Ranch range from soups and sandwiches at Miss Ellie’s Deli to catered group meals to a chuckwagon buffet dinner with singing cowboys.
The Day on the Ranch package includes a two-hour horse education segment with wranglers, a horseback trail ride, a tour of the Ewing Mansion, a deli lunch, a Ranch Round-up Gift Shop credit and a snack. This package is limited to six people.
Williams said with advance notice, the staff can customize programs for groups, such as a horse education demonstration.
Tours for school groups focus on the ranch’s plants and animals.
A 65,000-square-foot event center is used for parties, weddings, corporate meetings, family reunions, concerts and proms.S
